Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner
Choosing the right firewood can help keep your chimney flue cleaner. Here’s what to look for in firewood.
Why Seasoned Wood is Important
Seasoned wood, which has been dried properly for at least six months, burns cleaner than green wood. Green wood has a high moisture content, which leads to more smoke and creosote buildup in your chimney.
When using seasoned wood, the fire burns hotter and more efficiently, reducing the amount of drippings and residue that cling to your flue. Always check the moisture content of your firewood; it should be below 20% for optimal burning.
Types of Wood to Burn
Hardwoods such as oak, maple, and ash are excellent choices for firewood. They burn longer and hotter compared to softwoods, like pine, which tends to produce more creosote and soot due to its resin content.
Mixed hardwoods can also be effective, providing a balance of warmth and efficiency. Ensure whichever wood you choose is properly seasoned to minimize flue buildup and maximize heating efficiency.
Storing Firewood Properly
Proper storage of firewood is key to ensuring it remains dry and ready for burning. Stack your firewood off the ground, covered but with sides open for airflow, to allow it to dry out.
Keep wood away from direct contact with rain or snow by placing a tarp or shed over your stack. This helps accelerate the seasoning process and ensures your firewood is ready when you need it.
